Caring for your Brass Wares

Caring for your Brass Wares

Brass décor adds a timeless elegance to any home, but to keep your pieces looking their best, they require a bit of care.

We have pulled together a few of our favourite tips to maintain the beauty and lustre of your brass items.

  1. Gentle Spot Cleaning: If you notice any water marks or spots on your brass object, gently blot the area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel.

To treat any stains, use a mild detergent or specific brass stain remover. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push it deeper into the brass and damage the finish. Stay away from harsh chemicals, as they can damage or discolour the delicate brass surface.

A natural option here is using lemon juice and either baking soda or salt.

  2. Regular Dusting: Dust your brass items regularly using a soft, dry cloth to help prevent the build-up of grime and keep your brass looking shiny.

For intricate designs, we like to use a soft brush to reach crevices and grooves.

Stay away from cleaning products that use abrasive materials, like steel wool or harsh brushes, as these can scratch the surface and remove any protective finishes.

  3. Deep Cleaning with Soapy Water: For a deeper clean, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Dampen a soft cloth in the soapy water and gently wipe down your brass item.

Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent water spots.

  4. Polishing Brass: Polish your brass items occasionally to restore their shine. Use a brass-specific polish or make a homemade solution with equal parts of flour, salt, and vinegar.

Apply the polish with a soft cloth, rub gently, and then buff with a clean cloth. This will help remove tarnish and bring back the shine.

  5. Preventing Tarnish: Brass naturally tarnishes over time due to exposure to air and moisture. This is not like corrosion seen in other metals, but brass will darken - it is after all, still a natural material.

To slow down this process, you can apply a thin layer of clear lacquer or wax polish to your brass items. This protective coating will help maintain their lustre and reduce the need for frequent polishing.

You can also ensure your brass isn't sitting in water for prolonged periods, and wipe it down often, to help slow this process down even more.

  6. Storing Brass Items: When not in use, store your brass décor in a cool, dry place. Avoid wrapping them in plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and cause tarnishing.

Instead, use a breathable cotton bag or wrap the items in a soft cloth. We also like to add a natural sprig of rosemary or lavender to keep it smelling fresh - ensuring you don't put these directing in the bag with the brass in case oils from the sprigs leech out.

  7. Professional Restoration: For antique or valuable brass items that need extensive cleaning or repair, consider professional restoration. Experts can safely clean and restore your brass to its original glory without damaging the intricate details.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your brass décor remains beautiful and shiny for years to come. Regular maintenance will preserve the elegance and charm of your brass pieces, making them a lasting addition to your home.
