Decorative Homewares vs Functional Pieces: Why Not Have Both?
Share
Some people believe that all homewares should be practical. Others on the other hand, think that the beauty of the object should be all that matters.
We believe it should be both. But, not for everything.
Think about any heirlooms passed down to you, or your grandparents home and the pieces that fill them. They likely have functional pieces like sugar bowls, that were also incredibly beautiful as they sat proud on the dining table, in all their silver glory.
If we take it down to its core though; homes are more than just spaces we live in, they're spaces to feel, reflect, and recharge. So the pieces we choose to fill our homes with should pull double-duty: useful and meaningful.
The Myth of "Just Decorative"
There's a perception that anything described as "decorative" is indulgent or unnecessary. In todays fast-fashion world, this perception has been somewhat skewed by dupes often made from cheaper materials and produced in the masses. Making homewares and décor much more accessible for that "I just wanted what they had" purchasing choices.
Outside of this though, we believe that decorative pieces still have a place - and they aren't useless but instead, intentional. This is where we see the line between quality decorative pieces, over cheap fast-fashion "fillers".
Our unique wall hooks and decorative brass pieces are great examples of this.
Function That Doesn't Compromise on Style
We are big believers that pieces put out and on show, don't have to only be those decorative wares. In fact, the most loved homes and some of our favourites, feature pieces that are used every day.
Think of how more recently, the humble mortar and pestle has claimed its spot on kitchen benches. How your linen throws have moved from being stuffed into a basket to becoming a draped functional feature on the couch. Or how serving bowls are no longer kept in cupboards until you need them, they sit atop books or dining tables, holding other keepsakes, keys or other daily items.
These types of items aren't just functional, they are also beautiful. So why wouldn't you want to show them off?
Our collection of decorative homewares is a great place to start.
When Style Is the Function
Notwithstanding functional pieces becoming great options for home décor and displays, we also believe that sometimes, pieces can, should and need to just be a decorative piece.
Sometimes, a home needs a pause. A still moment. Pieces that are there to help you slow down, make you smile, inspire or excite you, or simply remind you of moments past.
And that is a kind of function too.
Whether it's a brass sculpture that pulls together your desired style in a certain part of a room, an inspiring travel photo that brings up something deep and personal, or small detailed teaspoons that make you smile when making your early-morning coffee.
These aren't filler. These are visual exhale moments that we all need. The type that catch your eyes and calm your mind without trying too hard.
