Is Leather a Good Material for Homewares?

Is Leather a Good Material for Homewares?

Leather has long been associated with luxury, but how does it hold up when used in home décor in our modern world?

Below, we break down the pros and cons (that we believe) leather in homewares offers, how to style it intentionally, and what to look for when shopping for quality leather pieces.

So, Why Leather?

Leather is a durable material that is naturally strong. Capable of holding up to all climates and conditions, it has a wonderful ability to age with time - and based on where you choose to place it, or even down to how you use it.

Offered in many textures and colours, it adds warmth to any space, and also allows depth and grounding through its natural form. This is all done without needing to add or do anything more to an item made of leather.

Like many other natural materials, leather offers flexibility in how it is styled. Whether your designing a space for a rustic feel, or a modern and minimalist direction - leather fits in. It's just then about choosing the right colour and texture.

Leather is a material that tells a story. Each mark and crease develops as a reflection of its journey.

Best Uses for Leather in Home Décor

We all know the largest piece of furnishing in a home that uses leather is often a couch or arm chair. But have you stopped to think about how you can introduce and use this material in smaller ways that still have a big impact?

Whether you have leather in your home already, or not, it doesn't have to match. In fact, it's the difference in colouring, shapes and textures that will build your space. You might like to introduce leather into pieces like trays and organisers on top of coffee tables, vanities or home-desks. Perhaps even cushion trims or subtle accents on soft furnishings, or differing sized leather loop holes as wall hooks.

Leather homewares can be introduced as both functional pieces, and simply those that bring you pleasure with nothing more than joy as their function.

What to Look For in Leather Homewares

Not all leather is created equal, and when you're choosing pieces for your home, a few details can make all the difference.

  • Full grain or top grain leather: These are the highest quality cuts, with full grain showing the natural markings and strength of the hide. They age beautifully and develop a rich patina over time. These grains are ideal for trays, organisers, or statement accents.

  • Hand-dyed vs. chemically treated: Hand-dyed leather uses natural or low-tox dyes, often resulting in more variation and character. Chemically treated leather, while cheaper, can release unwanted VOCs and usually lacks the same longevity or depth.

  • Ethical, small-batch production: The leather industry has a murky reputation, but brands that work with tanneries using vegetable-tanned or responsibly sourced hides (often a by-product of the food industry) can significantly reduce waste and environmental harm.

  • Rawhide interiors: Some pouches or organisers, like our own, are left unlined to preserve the natural inner hide. It offers a rustic finish that highlights the honesty of the material and feels distinctly handmade.

At Vita Haus, we choose leather pieces that align with our slow-made philosophy; always sourced directly, always made with purpose. We work closely with artisan partners who use traditional methods, ensuring each item is not only practical, but rich in story.

Caring for Leather Homewares

Leather is surprisingly low maintenance, and part of its beauty is how it evolves with use. Here’s how to keep your pieces looking (and feeling) their best:

Keep away from direct sunlight and heat: Leather can dry out or fade if left in strong sun. Store or display pieces somewhere temperate and shaded.

Wipe with a soft cloth: Dust regularly and use a damp (not wet) cloth for gentle cleaning. If needed, apply a leather conditioner every 6–12 months to keep the surface supple.

Don’t overstuff pouches or force structure: Let the item keep its intended shape. Overloading can stretch or warp the leather over time, causing creases and lines.

Embrace the patina: Scuffs, creases, and softening edges are part of leather’s story. With age, your piece will develop its own character, which is exactly the point.

FAQ's

Is leather sustainable for homewares? It can be, especially when sourced as a by-product or through ethical tanneries. Look for brands that prioritise small batch and natural dyeing methods.

Is leather high maintenance? Not really. With a little care and conditioning, leather homewares can last for decades and improve with age.

Can I mix leather with other natural materials? Absolutely. Leather pairs beautifully with wood, linen, brass, and terracotta. It helps to add grounding and contrast to softer or lighter textures. You're only decision here is what colour to choose!
