Is Luxury Home Decor Worth It? How to Tell When It’s Worth the Spend

Luxury means something different to everyone - it could be cost, material or availability. Ultimately, material and availability often then dictates what the price tag shows.

No matter the reason, at some point, we all start to question is that price tag really worth it

When it comes to making purchase decisions on luxury home décor, the answer isn't often a simple yes or no. Emotions, wants, desires all conflicting against price, needs and potentially even status.

Recently, we have started to notice a shift and some powerful reasons why it can be a much simpler choice. Here in our home of Australia, the demand for beautiful homewares has grown beyond fast fashion and recycling trends. People are wanting quality over quantity, and more importantly, pieces that mean something, stand for something and add to their story.

Let's dive into a few tips we've learnt along the way in identifying if to tell if it is worth the spend.

It's About Quality, Not Just the Price

In some industries, luxury may make you think over the top, or flashy. In our world, we believe luxury has a much deeper meaning - which isn't purely about surface-level details. When we speak of luxury, we mean things like handwoven textiles made from centuries-old traditions. We mean solid brass that was poured, polished and shaped by hand, and not machine produced. We mean natural fibres that have been delicately hand embroidered by skilled artisans, using this as their creative-canvas.

When you choose to purchase an item to bring into your home, you should consider the investment of that piece; beyond the price tag. Consider the longevity of it, and how it will make you feel to bring it home - these all last long after the price is forgotten.

It Tells a Story, and Often Starts One

What makes luxury homewares truly special is often the story behind them. Who made it? Where did the materials come from? Why did they choose to craft it in a certain way?

These pieces carry intention, culture, and how their story is often the start of a new chapter in your story. Whether it's a handmade ceramic pot that took days to finish, or a small but intricately details brass bell shaped by local craftspeople, you're not simply purchasing to decorate your space, you're connecting. Connecting to other humans who choose to put passion and love into their wares, for you to help communicate in your home.

It's an Expression of You - Not just a Trend

Fast homewares fill a space. Luxury homewares shape a sanctuary.

Read that again.

That's really the difference. There is certainly a time and a place for mass-produced furniture and wares, but fast fashion only concerned with selling you the next trend dictated by someone else, is not it. The difference is between a home that feels temporary, and one that reflects who you are.

You reflection might lean into earthy tones, coastal tones, or minimalist elegance. The beauty of investing in luxury pieces is that they evolve with you - enhancing the space around them and never being a fleeting throw-away trend.

It Can Be a Sustainable Choice

Something we want people to understand more about is that luxury can be better for the planet. But you have to know what you're looking for and what that means.

Consider and learn about where the materials are sourced from - are they imported or found locally to the place the products are made. Do the people making that pieces have to import in other materials. Does the creation of those pieces create waste that impacts the environment, or the humans around it.

Choosing sustainable homewares that are made to last and tick all the right boxes, helps to reduce waste, supports slow design, and honours the makers. Here at Vita Haus, our pieces are made in small batches with locally (to the Artisans), and ethically sourced materials - not churned out by machines in bulk.

When Is It Not Worth It?

If your decision to purchase a luxury piece is purely on price-tag alone, it probably isn't worth it. The cost of an item does not define it as luxury.

If  your decision to purchase it because you saw that everyone else was buying it, it is probably a fleeting trend and you'll forever be "keeping up with the joneses" with this approach.

If something aligns with your taste, values, and space - then this is your cue that you are considering the purchase for the right reasons and it is likely to bring joy for years to come.

And joy is always worth the spend.
